Sleep and quality job performance go hand in hand. When you get enough sleep, your health, well-being, and work efficiency improve.
Sleep also helps improve your mental health, mood, and brain function. During sleep, your brain creates and maintains pathways that are critical for memory formation and retention. These processes help enhance learning and problem-solving skills, which are essential for top performance in the workplace.
Sleep also promotes physical recovery in the body after exercise. As you sleep, your body tissues repair and strengthen. Aim for 7-8hrs each night!
Tackle the First Thing on Your To-Do List
One great productivity hack is to tackle the hardest thing on your to-do list. It’s likely it’s the first thing listed because it’s a high priority task or project. Tackling the most intimidating task first thing in the morning can help you feel more productive. Once you get the biggest task out of the way, your other tasks will seem easier in comparison.
Your brain works its best in the morning. By creating a schedule to knock out your hardest task at the beginning of the day or even the night before, you can take advantage of your peak mentality and productivity levels.
Take Regular Activity Breaks
If you stay at your desk all day long, then it’s important to take regular breaks. Anytime you catch yourself staring out the window is a good time for a nature walk. That 10 minutes spent on people watching could be spent on taking a nice walk, which improves creativity. Don’t be afraid to take a break every 15-30 minutes, especially if you’re feeling uninspired or tired. A small break can provide you with the rest you need to shift your focus and tackle the rest of your to-do list.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Start the day with a huge glass of water. Proper hydration is key to productivity, energy, and mental clarity. It also helps curb cravings for unnecessary junk food. Oftentimes when you feel sluggish, you're actually dehydrated. Grabbing a coffee or energy drink will not help (although tempting), but water will.
Dehydration can take its toll on your attention span. Water is the ultimate brain food, so make sure you’re getting enough to keep it alert and focussed throughout the day. Aim for 64oz or 2.5L!
Schedule Nutrition Breaks
Ever look up from your laptop and realize its already 1pm and you haven’t eaten yet today!
Food has a direct impact on our cognitive performance, which is why a poor decision at lunch can derail an entire afternoon.
Here’s a brief rundown of why this happens. Just about everything we eat is converted by our body into glucose, which provides the energy our brains need to stay alert. When we’re running low on glucose, we have a tough time staying focused and our attention drifts. This explains why it’s hard to concentrate on an empty stomach.
